The Best Conditions for Growing Hemp & How Does Alberta Stack Up?

January 14, 2019 in Growing

Plants require the right conditions to thrive and survive, a good but unfortunate reason why we don’t find any palm trees here in Calgary. How do Alberta’s weather conditions stack up to efficiently produce quality hemp and yield premium fibers and CBD extracts?

With the right natural conditions, growing can be done with very little expense as hemp regenerates fast, and can withstand the outdoor, Southern Alberta climate.

What Are the Most Favorable Conditions for Naturally Grown Outdoor Hemp Crops?

Temperature plays a significant role in sprouting the seed; typically anything above 7 Celsius will foster growth, but the temperature must maintain this for the entirety of the four-month cycle to protect the
ground from freezing.

Healthy soil contains many elements that supply nutrition to cannabis sativa L plants. With proper levels of nitrogen, phosphorus, sulfur, and potassium, a plant can grow into its healthiest form.

The plant will draw water from the ground, mixed in with the elements in the soil, feeding the plant. Proper sunlight is directly related to the days length and season influencing the hemp crops’ growth stages.

Threats To a Hemp Crop in Alberta

Frost & Hailstorms

In Alberta the weather can change rapidly, but that doesn’t mean a surprise frost will render your plants lifeless. The biggest threat in Alberta tends to be spring hail storms, commonly referred to as “icemeggedons”.

Rainfall Wrecking Your pH Balance

A major threat to your crop will be surprise torrential rainfalls, but casual showers mixed with a little bit of humidity is required. The acidity levels (pH) of the soil must also be determined; hemp prefers to be within a range of 6-7 pH.

Pests

Hemp crops grown in Alberta tend to avoid many common diseases and pest outbreaks. Root-rot (stem-rot) is always a concern for rainy conditions and crops grown in lower elevations.

Now that we’ve outlined the conditions that a hemp plant needs to yield premium quality materials and medicines, you might be wondering where we sit here in Alberta since our weather can fluctuate so drastically. Frigid temperatures in the winter and an abundance of rainfall in the summer is not uncommon, as any Albertan would know.

Growing Hemp In Southern Alberta

Alberta typically sees average temperatures between 0 – 10 degrees Celsius during October and April, but each season brings its own personality and can change in length on a whim. During these months our days are much longer and bring a healthy amount of sunlight to our plants.

Focusing on Southern Alberta, April to August would allow you plant to grow without problems, yielding one crop per year.

Focusing in on the Calgary and surrounding area, which are considered a drier climate, and hemp can withstand dry climates.

Next using data provided by AESA and the Province’s agri-food industry, we can see the levels of nitrogen and organic compounds in the soil around the Calgary area are in good standing, however, phosphate, potassium and sulfur need to be maintained slightly, as with most crops being grown here.

We had the Extract Lab crew go out and get their hands dirty and test the soil’s pH around Calgary’s surrounding prairies; results came in at a healthy 7 PH Even with the arctic chill, we Albertans, at least Southern, will have a 4-month window to grow an adult plant ready for cultivation.

It should be known that the additional of artificial treatment and increasing our expenses we can produce higher yielding crops. Don’t forget your permits though!

Travelling With Cannabis in Canada

January 14, 2019 in Weed

We know a lot of cannabis connoisseurs are curious about regulations when it comes to travelling with cannabis.
What are the limits for carrying, can you carry cannabis legally on a flight, pre-flight toking, and packing requirements have all been outlined by the federal Government, so let’s dig in.  For the purposes of this article we’re only talking recreational users, medical users follow different regulations.
Licensed medical card holders are permitted to travel by commercial plane with up to 150 grams; that will put things into perspective when we tell you the recreational carry allowance.
Here’s what we do know or think, weed can help with those erratic flight schedules, a pre-flight toke on a long flight could be just the thing to put you to sleep or make that seat more comfortable.
Certain airports that have just the right menu to cure those munchies, as long as you’re in the right terminal.

We already know that traveling to the USA from Canada with cannabis is prohibited. Even a Canadian traveling with cannabis between the legal States can be a risky maneuver and could end up having major consequences.

Planning to travel into Canada with cannabis? Entering Canada arriving from another legalized nation with Cannabis is also off the table. That’s a hard no from boarder officials.

Flying in Canada with Cannabis

It is certainly allowable to travel with a personal amount of recreational cannabis, coincidentally the limit remains the same as anywhere on the street at 30 grams. So, that’s a yes, you can travel from airport to airport within Canada, with an amount of 30 grams or under.
In my opinion, the major perk of being able to travel with cannabis; purchasing marijuana from other provinces, and coming home to share the stash with friends.
Luckily you have the option to either have your cannabis stored in your carry-on or checked luggage, this only assures you that your pot will arrive with you.
No photo description available.
What is the best way to be ready for those long cross-country flights, we searched for airports that can cater to cannabis users pre-flight tokes. While you can travel baked in Canada, not many airports will let you consume cannabis on their property.  See below for more details.

Travelling With Cannabis In Canada, the Main Points

  1. Don’t travel internationally out of Canada with cannabis
  2. Don’t come in to Canada internationally with cannabis
  3. Do travel from province to province with 30 grams or less in proper storage
  4. Don’t travel with more than 30 grams of cannabis provincially if you don’t have a medical physician, and a licence that says you can
  5. Do travel with more than 30 grams provincially if you’re a medical patient with the paper work to back it up
  6. Don’t smoke / vape cannabis at the airport unless permitted by facility policy, in the correct areas, we outline the policies below
  7. You are permitted to be baked on your flight
  8. Don’t drive baked, it’s illegal
  9. Do drive with cannabis (30 g is the most that you can carry at a time; we would assume that means 30 g in the car, total, but as of yet have found anyone to comment on the clarity of that policy), just make sure it’s concealed in a sealed bag, jar or package, outside the reach of the driver, and you can prove that it’s legally purchased bud (or you grew it)

Airport Cannabis Policies Canada

Vancouver Airport (YVR) caters to both recreational and medical cannabis users.  The airport has designated smoking and vaping sections around the facility, setting the new standard for airports across Canada.
Calgary Airport (YYC) has adopted a no tolerance policy for recreational users.
Edmonton Airport (EIA) has also adopted a policy that prohibits all recreational cannabis, although they do that mention medical cannabis is permitted within the smoking zones.
Toronto Pearson Airport (YYZ) prohibits the use of recreational cannabis on airport property.
Montreal Airport (YUL) also prohibits any recreational cannabis use on airport property.
Halifax Airport (YUZ) has taken a no tolerance policy towards cannabis use on airport property.
Winnipeg Airport (YWG) does not allow cannabis usage anywhere on the property.
Victoria Airport (YYJ) also does not allow cannabis usage anywhere on the property.
Ottawa Airport (YOW) has no mention of their policy on the website, we have contact their team and are awaiting a response.
Hamilton Airport (YHM) also has no mention on their website, we have contact their staff and are awaiting a response.
Saskatoon Airport (YXE) has no policies listed online, we are awaiting a response from their staff as well.
For the most part you are left with either sneaking around some dark empty corner far from sight which can end up with a ticket.
So, with very few options we move to the most obvious choice, an edible, a long lasting delicious treat. There are currently no dispensaries at any of the Canadian airports, and we all wonder if the day of duty-free cannabis has yet to come.
And of course, as always, no smoking on any aircraft, yet.

NewLeaf Cannabis Market Share Exceeds 20% of Open Recreational Dispensaries in Alberta

January 9, 2019 in Business, Today In Weed

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

While there is no limitation to the number of retail licences a single business or entity in Alberta can own, the AGLC has provided strict guidance into the market share of open dispensaries.

According to the AGLC website:

[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1547071028609{border-left-width: 2px !important;padding-top: 2% !important;padding-right: 10% !important;padding-bottom: 2% !important;padding-left: 10% !important;border-left-color: #8224e3 !important;border-left-style: solid !important;}”]

There is no cap on the total number of retail licences; however, no person(s) or entity can hold more than 15 per cent of retail cannabis licences in the province.

For example, if 250 retail cannabis stores open in the first year, based on the 15 per cent, no person(s) or entity could own more than 37 retail cannabis stores.

The maximum number of licences a person(s) or entity can hold will be reviewed and may be adjusted according to the actual number of existing licences in July 2019.

[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]

An overview of the AGLC Liscencee Search shows 65 licences across Canada, of which 14 are held by NewLeaf Cannabis, a National Access Cannabis brand. Of the 14, 8 are listed in Calgary.

Early Wednesday morning the Extract Magazine team got in touch with the AGLC to comment on the clarity and enforcement of the policies. We are still awaiting a response and will update this story as it unfolds.

[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_round_chart stroke_width=”2″ values=”%5B%7B%22title%22%3A%22NewLeaf%20Cannabis%22%2C%22value%22%3A%2214%22%2C%22color%22%3A%22blue%22%7D%2C%7B%22title%22%3A%22420%20Premium%20Market%22%2C%22value%22%3A%222%22%2C%22color%22%3A%22pink%22%7D%2C%7B%22title%22%3A%22Fire%20%26%20Flower%22%2C%22value%22%3A%227%22%2C%22color%22%3A%22juicy-pink%22%2C%22custom_color%22%3A%22%2375d69c%22%7D%2C%7B%22title%22%3A%22Canna%20Cabana%22%2C%22value%22%3A%224%22%2C%22color%22%3A%22violet%22%2C%22custom_color%22%3A%22%23b97ebb%22%7D%2C%7B%22title%22%3A%22Spirit%20Leaf%22%2C%22value%22%3A%223%22%2C%22color%22%3A%22pink%22%2C%22custom_color%22%3A%22%23f7be68%22%7D%2C%7B%22title%22%3A%22Sweet%20Tree%20Cannabis%20Co%22%2C%22value%22%3A%222%22%2C%22color%22%3A%22juicy-pink%22%2C%22custom_color%22%3A%22%2300c1cf%22%7D%2C%7B%22title%22%3A%22Nova%20Cannabis%22%2C%22value%22%3A%225%22%2C%22color%22%3A%22mulled-wine%22%2C%22custom_color%22%3A%22%23f7be68%22%7D%2C%7B%22title%22%3A%22Other%22%2C%22value%22%3A%2227%22%2C%22color%22%3A%22purple%22%2C%22custom_color%22%3A%22%23555555%22%7D%5D”][vc_column_text]

One thing is clear; amidst the flurry of new regulations, who is to blame here? It’s been reported that NewLeaf Cannabis originally submitted a total of 37 applications, a number that would keep them within the guidelines of less than 15% industry ownership.

Unfortunately, due to a rocky roll out, inconsistent application approvals and relatively unclear guidelines, NewLeaf Cannabis will have to await changes to the current regulation to expect more recreation dispensary approvals.

January 8, 2019 in Business, Today In Weed

2019 is on track for a rocky start with the AGLC releasing an immediate recall on cannabis sold in Alberta November 28, 2018.

Who is affected by the moldy cannabis recall?

The sale of tainted cannabis was traced to Alberta sales of 1428 units of 7g quantities, distributed by Newstrike Brands Ltd. “Up Cannabis”.

Trends in Canadian Cannabis Since Legalization in 2018

January 3, 2019 in Today In Weed

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_single_image image=”25172″ img_size=”full”][vc_column_text]

2018 brought Canadians something we though would be prolonged forever, legalization of cannabis. With legalization comes interest from those we would probably never expect. Join us as we take a look at Google Trends and other software platforms that will help us learn about 2018, with a year in review by Google search engine data.

If you don’t know, Google is basically a massive database of information and businesses, categorizations and users navigating the information. Google builds a profile on all people and businesses using their search engine. This information helps them understand trends of the past based on demographics, interests, and find correlations between a number of different statistics.

[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][penci_fancy_heading title=”Google Cannabis Trends Since Legalization” block_id=”penci_fancy_heading-1546560082095″]

Google’s Trends don’t tell us consumer behavior as a whole, but they give insight into when and where popular terms were searched through the Google search engine.

So we took a look into a bunch of terms people might be searching in Canada over the last 3 months  since legalization.

[/penci_fancy_heading][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][penci_fancy_heading title=”Where to buy…” block_id=”penci_fancy_heading-1546559767904″]

We compared the popularity of terms “where to buy weed” “where to buy cannabis” and “where to buy marijuana”.  All 3 display a variable volume with similar search trends.  All 3 peaked in October 17, 2018, followed by a significant decrease until today.

[/penci_fancy_heading][vc_single_image image=”25148″ img_size=”full”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][penci_fancy_heading title=”Dispensary + Cannabis Terms…” block_id=”penci_fancy_heading-1546561462608″]

We compared the popularity of cannabis related terms including the word dispensary. “cannabis dispensary” “weed dispensary” and “marijuana dispensary”.

Once again, all 3 terms follow similar patterns of growth and decline,  but peaking out on October 1, 2018.  Since then, a quick decline and consistently low searches for all 3 marijuana descriptors.

[/penci_fancy_heading][vc_single_image image=”25152″ img_size=”full”][penci_fancy_heading title=”” block_id=”penci_fancy_heading-1546560177472″]

We also noticed that “weed” is used far more than cannabis, or marijuana in these searches.   The volume of “weed” terms seems to be far greater in all the top 5 “dispensary” searching provinces.   No to mention, the “weed” terminology searches are far greater than “cannabis” and “marijuana” combined.

Unfortunately we were not able to distinguish age groups for each term, but Google permits the break down of regional searches.

As you can see below, the Yukon Territories have the highest concentration of “dispensary” search terms in general, “weed” terminology making up nearly 100% of those queries entered into Google.

[/penci_fancy_heading][vc_single_image image=”25154″ img_size=”full”][penci_fancy_heading title=”Dispensary Terms…” block_id=”penci_fancy_heading-1546561810275″]

Let’s remove the cannabis descriptive terms and look at dispensary terms.

“Dispensaries” “dispensary” and “open dispensary” terms were put into a chart for comparison, and the same results appeared.

Around October 17, 2018, a massive spike in similar searches, followed by a significant drop and severely reduced searches moving forwards.

[/penci_fancy_heading][vc_single_image image=”25156″ img_size=”full”][penci_fancy_heading title=”Cannabis, Weed & Marijuana…” block_id=”penci_fancy_heading-1546562567073″]

This gets less exciting as move down the list to notice that on October 17, 2018; basically, all search queries we ventured into regarding cannabis related concepts spiked significantly in Canada.  Significantly describes a roughly 400% increase across the board on the day Canada legalized cannabis.

“Weed” and “cannabis” terms are nearly on par when searched alone, and “marijuana” terms come in last at less that 50% of the other two.

[/penci_fancy_heading][vc_single_image image=”25159″ img_size=”full”][penci_fancy_heading title=”Industry Jobs…” block_id=”penci_fancy_heading-1546563159945″]

Employment in the cannabis industry is where we start to see a difference in trends.

We put “cannabis jobs” “marijuana jobs” and “weed jobs” against each other on a graph and the results were quite different than previously.

The “cannabis jobs” term heavily outweighs both “weed jobs” and “marijuana” jobs.  Unfortunately without more information, that is about all we can draw from this data.  It would be interesting to compare occupational terms to occupational qualifications and age groups, I think we would find some interesting correlations.

[/penci_fancy_heading][vc_single_image image=”25162″ img_size=”full”][penci_fancy_heading title=”” block_id=”penci_fancy_heading-1546564039575″]

Regionally, New Brunswick is clearly in highest demand of cannabis related occupation seeking.

NB is followed closely by Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Nova Scotia and British Columbia.  New Brunswick has a population of just over 753,000 residence.

Google does not accommodate for population density, so we have to assume that NB is on the same playing field as Ontario, and other heavily density areas.  This tells us there is a far higher percentage of New Brunswick citizens looking for employment in cannabis than anywhere else across Canada.

[/penci_fancy_heading][vc_single_image image=”25164″ img_size=”full”][penci_fancy_heading title=”Grow vs Buy Cannabis” block_id=”penci_fancy_heading-1546560988821″]

Are Canadians more interested in growing their own cannabis, or buying it?  We put grow vs buy terms in the context of both “weed” and “cannabis”, two popular Canadian terms for the flower we love.

It’s interesting to note that “buy” terms far exceed that of “grow” terms.  We added “purchase” into the equation,  but those didn’t qualify.

[/penci_fancy_heading][vc_single_image image=”25171″ img_size=”full”][penci_fancy_heading title=”” block_id=”penci_fancy_heading-1546566578385″]

In terms of regions, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Saskatchewan are the top contributors to search results for “grow cannabis” and “grow weed”.

Where to Buy Cannabis Seeds in Canada

January 2, 2019 in Growing, Products, Weed

Since October 17, 2018, recreational cannabis users have been plagued with the inability to buy cannabis clones or seeds from a legal source.

That changed early in 2019 as the AGLC operated online recreational cannabis dispensary, albertacannabis.org listed two types of cannabis seeds for sale to Albertians; one THC dominant,  the other a balanced THC CBD ratio,  both Tweed exclusives.

Cannabis Seeds For Sale On Alberta Cannabis

The two strains listed by Alberta Cannabis, Tweed Argyle (CBD dominant) and Tweed Bakerstreet (Indica dominant).   Argyle and Bakerstreet are produced in Ontario Canada and come in similar packaging from Canopy Growth under the recreational Tweed brand.

[/vc_column_text][penci_text_block block_title_align=”style-title-left”]

Tweed Argyle Cannabis Seeds (CBD)

  • THC: 2 − 10 %
  • CBD: 2 − 10 %
  • Nordle | CNB-00600002
  • $45.84 CAD
  • Equivalent to 4g of Dried Cannabis = 4 Seeds In Total

Terpene profile

Tweed Bakerstreet Cannabis Seeds (THC)

  • THC: 15 − 24 %
  • CBD: 0 − 0.07 %
  • Hindu Kush | CNB-00600005
  • $60.00 CAD
  • Equivalent to 4g of Dried Cannabis = 4 Seeds In Total

Terpene profile

A few questions remain

While some provinces in the west still lack availability of legal seeds, other provinces are already offering seeds along side cloned plants.

In the black market, companies such as Quebec Seeds and Crop King have been offering a far wider variety of strains for years at a comparable price.   The biggest question that remains perhaps, is the quantity of feminized seeds Albertains will receive with their order.

We cannot find anything on the website that suggests these seeds are feminized at all (required feminine plant to produce cannabis buds), which puts into question the value of the packages we are purchasing.

By government standards, 4g of dried cannabis = 4 seeds.  Essentially, we are buying 4 seeds, with a 50% chance of being female, leaving us with 2 seeds that we still have to sprout.  With 100% performance, Canadians will be lucky to have 2 useful seeds from these packages.

If you have ordered seeds from Alberta Cannabis, please get in touch with us via email at hello@extactmag.com.

You can buy Tweed Bakerstreet and Tweed Argyle from the albertacannabis.org website.

Since publishing this article, the Alberta Cannabis website has sold out of Tweed Bakerstreet seeds.   Along with Alberta Cannabis, Tweed Bakerstreet seeds can be found across Canada on a number of other provincially authorized online cannabis retailers websites.

The high THC option Tweed Bakerstreet sold out in just over 3 days of listing the cannabis seeds for sale online.

Where to buy cannabis seeds in Canada

With legal cannabis seed sales only permitted by licensed producers for medical patients, or business to business (recreational dispensaries), cannabis seed sales are quite limited in supply and accessibility.

Grey area options have saturated the market offering cannabis horticulturalists an illegal alternative with cheaper seeds, feminized options, and a far larger variety.

Buy cannabis seeds online in Canada

Aside from Alberta Cannabis, a few online options cater to buying cannabis seeds in Canada. These are listed for novelty use only and we recommend you take the legal option to purchasing and growing cannabis in Canada. Below you will find companies that offer wide varieties of both sativa, indica and hybrid strain seeds, as well as seeds for strains high in CBD, THC and auto-flowering varieties.

A Look Inside a Neat Little 4 Plant Soil Setup: Part 1/2

January 2, 2019 in Growing

Welcome to our grow room, well its not ours but over the next couple months we will get to experience first hand how to grow and cultivate cannabis. What we’ll witness over the next couple months will hopefully offer insight into a particular method of growing.

Lets set the scene, we have a room lit by an 1800-watt equivalent LED light shining among the clones, which have been meticulously chosen to be strictly feminized and descendants of healthy plants.  Located in the corner, a high-power blower and carbon filter and in the opposite corner a simple house fan.

Finally, a screen is suspended above the plants, we’ll get to that later.

The process we’re documenting is known as scrogging, this is a method that will allow the lower leaves to catch light ultimately growing a wider canopy. The other major benefit is even budding during the flowering phase.

Day one: The baby’s home!

The journey begins August 15th the clones have been taken from larger plants and among them we have a Vixen, Super lemon Haze, and a coupe of Hash Plants. Over the course of this grow all of these babies will be supplied with the same amount of water, light, nutrients, and love.

Three weeks have passed, and the roots have set firmly into the soil. We begin transferring what once were babies into larger pots making sure the soil is firmer on one side, this allows us to control the stems direction of growth, making sure that we can offer each plant enough room.

We can already see a health plant being formed, the consistent color and size of the leafs is a good indication. During this month keeping the branches all level picking the largest of the branches to be saturated by the light.

This is done so by bending the main branches enough to expose the lower branches to light.  We were told that “after all these are weeds, so you can bend and even break the branches without the plant being affected”

After noting temperatures and humidity levels, our numbers came back at 25°C and 39% Humidity.

This reading is on the lower side, but our grower told us “you wouldn’t want anything over 50%, higher level  can form mold ” Raising the humidity can be done with various methods, to manage the 1% our grower places a 3 Gallon bucket of water inside the tent.

Over time the water will evaporate into the surroundings.

During this month the net for the scrogging will be lowered and each stem will be braided through the net.

How to set up scrogging

This technique is fairly simple, you must search for long branches and extend them out as far as possible along the net and begin weaving them through.

Now we still have to give some other branches time to grower out otherwise we will have to make the ultimate decision to cut them loose and allow the top canopy to receive all the nutrients.

The theory behind this is you are allowing more area of the plant to be reached by the light, ultimately speeding up photosynthesis and growth.

Here we leave off, no pun intended, with the hopes that the lower leaves can eventually reach the net and allow us to finish extending the canopy .

TIP from grower: A good practice in keeping your grow contaminant free, prior to entering your garden using hand sanitizer to helps keep unwanted bacteria out will be part of grow healthy plants

Tip From Me:

Don’t wait to long to harvest could cause your plant to hermaphrodites stress can also do this!

Extract Year In Review

December 31, 2018 in Today In Weed

Below are pictures that encompass the last few months, and the launch of Extract Magazine in Calgary, Alberta Canada.

We’re looking forwards to an awesome 2019 with the Canadian cannabis community. The team at Extract Magazine would like to thank everyone who came out to the events, participated in the contests and have contacted us to become a part of the movement.

Extract Magazine launched in 2018 as cannabis media brand and has become so much more because of Calgary’s amazing cannabis community. Through the partners we’ve met this year we look forwards to bringing Calgary, and Canada amazing events, opportunities, and education in 2019.

We will also continue to connect the communities’ understanding of, and passion for cannabis with the businesses and regulators that need to hear it. We understand that the Cannabis Act didn’t necessarily bring the changes that were expected, or needed. And that’s not okay. Our battle to communicate the communities need for transparent and realistic regulations will continue in the New Year.

Please make sure to call a cab, friend or a ride share company if you are drinking, smoking, vaping or eating cannabis tonight!

Happy 2019

Health Canada Releases Cannabis Product Policy Framework for Feedback

December 20, 2018 in Business, Today In Weed

Health Canada released the framework for cannabis products early Friday December 20, 2018 and it’s not pretty.  Fortunately, they have requested your input and will be revisiting the policies in two months.

The regulation is a step in promoting safe consumption of cannabis.

Focusing on labeling, product strength, packaging, and general areas, the outlined policies outline suggested intake of edibles, beverages, inhaled products, ingested cannabis and THC based products.

We want you to judge if the suggested limits are feasible.

https://www.canada.ca/content/dam/hc-sc/documents/services/drugs-medication/cannabis/resources/proposed-regulations-edible-cannabis-extracts-topical-eng.pdf

A few points that stand out:

Edible Cannabis & Beverage Proposed Regulation

  • 10 mg of THC per package
  • No added vitamins, minerals
  • Packaging must be plain
  • No health or dietary claim

Cannabis Extract (Ingested & Inhaled) Proposed Regulation

  • 1000 mg of THC per container
  • No added vitamins, minerals
  • No sweeteners, coloring or sugars
  • No nicotine or caffeine
  • Maximum package sizeof 90 mL for liquid extracts
  • Plain packaging

Cannabis Extract (Concentrated THC) Proposed Regulation

  • 1000 mg of THC per container
  • No added vitamins, minerals
  • No sweeteners, coloring or sugars
  • Max package size of 7.5 grams

Cannabis Topicals (Concentrated THC) Proposed Regulation

  • 1000 mg of THC per container
  • For use on skin, hair and nails
  • Limited to cosmetic grade ingredients
  • Must include appropriate warning labels

This puts a stick in the spokes of companies working to develop innovative products under the new Cannabis Act, put into effect October 17, 2018.

If we look at the market for cannabis consumables, development has focused around infused coffees products, candies, beer derived from hemp, cannabis infused beers, nicotine pens including CBD & THC and other products that would be deemed  illegal under the proposed regulations.

Health Canada’s release raises questions regarding the black market and the Canadian Governments willingness to offer a competitive solution that will cut into the market-share of companies operating outside the regulations.

But there’s a catch!

Here’s how you can share your input on Health Canada’s proposed cannabis product policies

Health Canada is looking for your input.

Today through February 20, 2019, Canadians are permitted to leave their input on the proposed regulations by form of an online, or mail in survey.

Submit your input on the proposed cannabis product policies here.

A few weeks back, the Extract Team set out on a THC infused adventure, one we won’t forget any time soon!   In search for a new style team building experience, we drop the bar scene to combine luxurious fine dining, cannabis and good times, all under one roof with the NomadCook.

Travis Peterson is a chef with a long lived interest in cooking and a history in Oil & Gas.

In 2015 Travis was the choice of Masterchef Canada Season 3.  Advancing through the top 18, he turned passion into reality, launching the Nomadcook.  Travelling across North America, the Nomadcook brings a unique, high quality dining experience to households and functions alike.

The Nomad Cook’s Infused Dining Series (#infuseddiningseries) is what we were after.  A THC or CBD infused 5 course meal with all the fixings of fine dining.  We came in a little baked and a little nervous, and came out humbled by the experience (and really baked).

Amidst Calgary’s influx of core construction we finally found a parking spot in East Village and prepared ourselves for the first of many experiences with infused cannabis cuisine with a quick joint.

The Infused Dining Series uses a distinctive approach to hosting events.  The app AirB&B opens communication with property owners, from there, the team narrows down locations ideal for the crowd and event.

So the idea is gather people for a good time, around good food, with great conversation and new faces.

A table of 8 sat awaiting us with nice silverware, warm decor and a beautiful view of the Bow River.

The unique thing about the Infused Dining Series is you have the choice of a private function or an open experience with other parties.

Extract shared a table with the team at Total Health Cannex and a few mixed martial arts athletes.

A culinary experience makes it easy to pop out of your shell and feel comfortable meeting new people.  Travis uses food and dining environment to build friendships and memories with those sitting around you in an amazing way.

The dinner begins with Travis introducing the infused dining series and the motivation behind his unique approach to fine dining.

Going around the table to understand the cannabis preferences of each individual,  attendants are given a scale of 1-5, 5 being a high level of CBD and THC infused into your dishes.  We went with 6.

The Infused Cooking Series uses distillate as a means to add the good stuff.  Travis recommends it for it’s flavorless odorless properties and believes it’s the best extract for a quality infused meal.

Each course is prepared in full view, and the presentation was immaculate.

Using distillate means the flavor profile of the food is not compromised, and you can really see Travis’ creative side shine with the culinary creations that arrived in front of us.

The cameras came out as the food starts arriving because each plate looked smelled and tasted like a culinary masterpiece.   Travis managed to change my whole perspective on seafood with the creativity and care put into each of the 5 courses.

Overall the experience lasted the better part of two hours.

The time flew by as we were all having a blast all the while getting quite stoned.

The Infused Dining Series sometimes offers alcohol in the form of beer or wine, although Travis expressed the differences in alcohol free vs alcohol encouraged experiences over the years, and really vetos for an alcohol free dinner, which was a nice touch.

The Infused Dining Series is perfect for a handful of demographics and scenarios.

I would recommend this to families looking for an elevated gathering (18+ of course), a team building activity for employees that is outside of the box, couples looking to socialize, or any small – large groups looking for a completely new and unique dining experience.

Check out the NomadCook’s website, or get in touch with Travis via Facebook to set up your private, or hosted infused function.

A look inside Four20 Premium Market, Calgary’s first recreational dispensary

December 11, 2018 in Business, Events, Today In Weed

A few months back we had the opportunity to visit Calgary’s first recreational dispensary,  420 Premium Market

The Extract team hosted a handful of interviews with customers pre, and post purchase, as well spoke with Amber Craig, head of Marketing.

You can find the customer’s reviews on the latest Volume of Extract Potcast.  Check back in the coming weeks as we’ve put together a VLOG of the day’s events.  In the mean time,  follow our YouTube channel here.

The experience at 420 Premium Market was upbeat and an overall great time.  Among all the security and zoned off areas (that were mandatory due to regulations), the crowd was pumped and the mood was happy.  The employees were super nice and eager to talk to us.   Everyone I spoke with was educated on cannabis and seemed excited to be a part of the legalization in Calgary.

420 Premium Market was kind enough to give our team a tour of the place and describe how their operations work, which by the way, they are pretty streamline.  The crowd was massive, but the queues were moving fast and efficiently.   To be honest, they handled the floods of customers really well.

The selection of cannabis was great across the board for varieties, although most of the flower was short of a solid triple a.  Display cases allow customers to see and smell what they are getting which adds to the purchasing experience.

Unfortunately since our visit, all recreational dispensaries have been plagued with inefficient inventory levels between the AGLC and licensed producers.

420 Premium Market has made it clear that they have a team employed to battle inventory levels and obtain cannabis at it’s earliest availability through the due process instilled by the Alberta Gaming and Liquor Commission.

Kush Collective – A pre-legalization interview with a startup cannabis dispensary in Calgary

December 10, 2018 in Business, Spotlights

The Extract team met up with the guys behind the beautiful brand at Kush Collective!

Through a generous exchange of knowledge, they helped us understand what happens behind the scenes for the recreational dispensary startups in Calgary.

The Kush Collective team is currently going through an appeal process as their location was put on hold.  For a small business in the Canadian cannabis industry,  recreational dispensaries face high startup costs and risk of approval.   Since conducting this interview, the AGLC has put a halt to recreational dispensary approval due to lack of cannabis available to service the markets needs.

Kush Collective told us competition will be fierce, and expense can easily sink a small business.

Your website talks highly about education, tell me about some of the community events your team has been a part of?

Education is something we really believe in, and we are committed to reaching out to all types of cannabis users. We’ve been engaging not only with potential customers but our new community of Killarney. We’ve attended the Cannabis and Hemp Expo hosted an open house at the community association and participated in roundtable discussions with the city of Calgary. We plan to host events to promote further education through the store, so people can learn more about cannabis.

What is Kush Collective for the Calgarians that haven’t heard about you?

We are deeply passionate pro-cannabis supporters who love talking, learning about, and most importantly education others about cannabis.  We have been vocal advocates in favor of legalization for almost two decades. Now we are starting a retail business to share our love of recreational cannabis with Calgarians.

Which cannabis consumer are going to get the most value from being a Kush Collective customer?

We want to help anyone who wants to try recreational cannabis to have a positive experience, whether they are a first-time user, a long-term cannabis consumer, or someone in between. We consider ourselves experts in cannabis and want to share our knowledge with our customers so w can help them find the right product for them

How are you differentiating yourselves in a market that might become quite saturated?

We take real pride in being Calgarians and promoting local businesses; we believe that’s important to Calgarians, too.

We know we will be competing with big-box stores, but we don’t believe they offer the same meaningful customer service that customers want when buying recreational cannabis. We want to have a personal relationship with each of our customers.

Our staff will undergo rigorous training in addition to any mandated training programs, to better help our customers select the right product for them. We are committed to engaging with and giving back to our community

How do pricing and quality, find a happy medium with Kush Collective?

The products we offer will be carefully selected to ensure we are stocking the best cannabis at the best price. Of course, we will carry products to meet a variety of budgets, but as cannabis enthusiast ourselves, we know that you get what you pay for.

Break down the process in simple terms of getting legalized as a recreational dispensary in Canada.

First and most importantly was completing an intensive application with AGLC, complete with background check, security details, in addition to meeting numerous other requirements.

Having a clear understanding of and adherence to all the municipal, provincial and federal regulations is key. And then, of course, applying for a municipal development permit and business license.

What hardships and limitations do potential dispensaries face?

The biggest limitation for small businesses in the retail cannabis space is finding available locations. The big developers are reluctant to deal with small groups like ours, they usually want prohibitive covenants and rich personal guarantee.

On top of that, huge cannabis companies, liquor stores, second cups, etc. have blanketed the city with cannabis development permit applications, add the 300m separation distance bylaw and we have a situation where it is nearly impossible for small entrepreneurs to find suitable commercial real estate for cannabis

This process is not for the faint-of-heart! It has been a lot of work to get to where we are now, and there is still a lot to go. From finding a location that worked for us, and landlord who understood the market for what it will be, to working with the city to obtain a business license, there have been a lot of challenges. But this is a labor of love – we believe in what we are doing.

How do you believe the cannabis regulatory system could improve to better stimulate the economy and small businesses in Calgary?

Currently, there are a lot of restrictions on marking and advertising. Relaxing some of these regulations will help to further differentiate retailers and eliminate the black market. We are excited about the potential to work with other local businesses to cross-promote our products.

We also think that the City made a mistake be choosing to implement a public consumption ban. We agree with their intent, we don’t want people smoking cannabis around kids, or thick cannabis clouds in our national parks. We think designated consumption areas are a much better solution.

The reality is that people are not going to be using cannabis exclusively in their homes, and with a public smoking bars, they are going to be forced into dark alleys, or their vehicles to consume cannabis. This is exactly the kind of thing we are trying to stop with legalization, so we feel like a public consumption ban is counter-intuitive.

Additionally, this makes it impossible for tourists to use cannabis. Most hotels will not allow cannabis use, and with a public consumption ban, tourists are out of luck. It’s a strange thing to tell people cannabis is legal now, but when visiting Calgary you can’t use it anywhere.

I know that there is some strict guidelines when it comes to advertising and retailing cannabis products, what helped your team pick a location and was there an equation or syllabus you followed?

We have been very careful to adhere to the rules and regulations around advertising our store, and even recreational cannabis products. We wanted to be in a location that was easily accessible to our customers, with free parking, with a modern relaxed feel and well-laid out floorplan.

As legislation nears, advertising rules will become clearer, and we hope to engage our customers across social media platforms.

In regard to product such as edibles and extracts which are still illegal, what are some bottlenecks that you believe could change to promote small business in the cannabis industry locally?

We understand that this is new territory for Canada, and it’s better that legislation around cannabis- in its various forms- is rolled our thoughtfully instead of being rushed and ill-prepared. That’s the best way to eliminate grey and black markets. Enforcement agencies will need to play a major role in cracking down on existing grey and black markets currently, offering recreational cannabis products that are still illegal.

Input to Calgarian policy makers for helping sustain and grow this industry in Calgary?

There needs to be greater balance to allow small and larger companies to compute on an event foothold. We feel that a lot of people are getting into this business with dollar signs in their eyes, and instead emerging entrepreneurs should be based on their merit.

What does the perfect legalization model look like in your head, and how far is it from where we stand in Canada today?

There has been clear favoritism toward large companies and bigger investors, resulting in an unfair playing field for others to enter the cannabis market.

This is huge opportunity to cultivate Canadian and Calgarian business, but there simply hasn’t been the support needed from municipal, provincial or federal levels.

What we gleaned from the states that have approved recreational marijuana, is that local businesses who have had the opportunity to flourish have reinvested in their communities; we fear this won’t be the same for Canada and profits will go elsewhere.

What is one tip for cannabis entrepreneurs taking your same path into the world of recreational dispensaries?

Do Your homework, and make sure this is a business you want to be in. Not simply for a profit but that you care about the industry and the community you serve. All eyes are on Canada, and it’s important that everyone involved in this industry feels that responsibility to set an example.

This interview was conducted in early July.  Since we have tried to contact the boys at Kush Collective to update the status of their location approval.  Our attempts have been unsuccessful.

Prohibition 2.0 in Canada

December 10, 2018 in Opinion, Today In Weed

As George Orwell wrote:

“Until they become conscious, they will never rebel, and until after they have rebelled they cannot become conscious”

Figuratively, this is relevant with our current state of agree-ability as a society with cannabis legalization. With a re-election date pending, and further political order actuating, a rushed legalization date set for October 17th/2018 was decided.

In the turmoil of the unrest, and the hopeful vision of a legal day the people could consume cannabis recreationally, a network of financial, political, legal, and social framework was promptly formulated. In these distractions, to the awareness of a few, the government tasked itself to sneakily infringe upon every Canadians rights.

With a new controlled substance being released to the public, the understanding of control and regulation, not only as personal consumption, but as a social consumption, it is inevitable that will require legislation and laws to facilitate the continual flow of society.

The issue with this has been; the government has released its legal network of guidelines, based as though cannabis is going to cause an un-proportionate problem with society as has alcohol.

In respects to operation of an automobile, our rights to”reasonable suspect of impairment” (driving irradicably, swerving, inconsistent speeds, etc), have been abolished to: society having to provide abody sample, regardless of circumstance, on demand.

Now, this isn’t a problem for most people, and most people would agree that driving an auto mobile under the influence is a massive social faux-paux. The issues lie in the methods they are demanding the samples: mouth swabs, breath tests, blood samples. Some of these methods facilitate the collection of one’s personal DNA which is collected and saved.

“When Part 2 of the legislation comes into force, police officers who have an approved screening device on hand will be able to test a sample of any driver they lawfully stop, even without reasonable suspicion”

http://www.justice.gc.ca/eng/cj-jp/sidl-rlcfa/index.html#a2

This isn’t even touching the topic of medical use and the question ability of impairment in those users. That is a heated debate that hastily requires some supporting studies and logic as to not turn half the population into criminals that are forced to use the bus. This is an area where legislation needs to help the people, not hinder.

The current intoxication values they have given for ‘legally intoxicated’, are the same levels shown in medical patients days after use, that showcase no impairment whatsoever. Some patients will be unable to legally drive for days in-between dosing, with the new legislature and road traps.

With the issue of mass testing at road stops, and the ability to be subjected to a test regardless of circumstance, that is going to hurt more than just the society of Cannabis users.

Thinking to when they changed the legal alcohol limit to 0.05 from 0.08, and how that minor change affected the number of conviction rates substantially with zero effect on alcohol related accidents. It’s an over control legislation which has abolished everyone’s rights to not be bothered and hassled unless they have infringed upon society. It will lead to full courthouses and a further impacted middle class.

Impairment is not a number, it’s a state of being. Just because there has been an acute rush to legalization and there hasn’t been a suitable impairment measuring system designated, doesn’t mean we give up our rights and supply our DNA on demand.

Just my two joints.

Health Canada Gives Shoppers Drug Mart The Okay To Sell Medical Cannabis

December 8, 2018 in Business, Today In Weed

Health Canada has given Shoppers Drug Mart the go-ahead to sell medical cannabis online to licensed patients.

The Medical Cannabis by Shoppers Drug Mart website was live as of December 8, 2018 at 4:20 pm, although they are not yet selling merchandise, and no expected date has been released.

Shoppers Drug Mart was purchased by Loblaws in late 2014 for $12.4 billion in a cash-stock deal that shook up the health and beauty market, and saw Loblaws acquire 2300 locations across Canada, including 1800 pharmacies.

In October 2016, Shoppers Drug Mart took the leap, submitting applications to become a licensed medical cannabis producer in Canada.  As of September, the check mark was granted, and it appears the Loblaws owned brand is focused on quick growth in the Canadian cannabis industry.

The two year approval process gives us insight as to why medical and recreational cannabis inventory levels are backlogged across Canada.

One can only assume the long game for Loblaws contains over the counter cannabis for medical patients, although currently, laws prohibit over the counter medical cannabis purchases.

According to Health Canada, Shoppers has been granted licences to sell fresh and dried cannabis, seeds, oils and live plants.

The Medical Cannabis by Shoppers Drug Mart’s website reads:

As a leader in health and wellness for Canadians, Shoppers Drug Mart will soon be your trusted source for medical cannabis from a variety of producers.   Through a secure website, patients with a valid medical document will soon be able to purchase a wide selection of medical cannabis products that meet strict quality and safety standards, and rest assured that their order will be delivered discreetly, right to their doorstep.

https://cannabis.shoppersdrugmart.ca/

It appears that Shoppers is jumping into full cannabis mode, adding a medical cannabis button right to their website header, and updating job listing to incorporate newly granted cannabis positions in Ontario.

Check out their listings below:

Pardon a Cannabis Conviction in Canada – The How To Guide

December 6, 2018 in Today In Weed

You’ve probably heard rumors about cannabis convictions being overturned in Canada post legalization. Approaching October 17, 2018 (Canada’s national legalization of cannabis date),  the Canadian Government and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau made it clear they have a path to right the wrongs and overturn past cannabis possession convictions that they deemed unnecessary.

Unfortunately the topic line that wasn’t discussed is the timeline and costs associated with doing so.

We looked into the total process of receiving a pardon for a cannabis conviction in Canada.  Here’s what we learned:

  1. Just because Canada pardons you, doesn’t mean the US will acknowledge it
  2. It’s very costly
  3. It’s very time consuming

Pardons are granted by the Parole Board of Canada (PBC) and referred to as “Record Suspensions” in Canada.  According to Pardon.org, the general timeline for submission and processing is 6 months to 2 years.

Keep in mind, a record suspension doesn’t remove your charges completely, it pushes them to the side for the time being, and although Canada may recognize that your case has been removed, a record suspension doesn’t guarantee any other country will recognize the changes.

How to pardon your cannabis charges in Canada

Cost of record suspension in Canada

As of May 2017, allcleared.com reports that a Canadian Pardon will cost you $631.00, with some additional fees depending upon the details of your case.

Nationalpardon.org suggests that cost can increase quick, with a variable total of over $1000 as seen below:

Breakdown of record suspension costs

? Fingerprints ($75 per set)
$95-$150 Court Disposition.
$40 Criminal Conviction.
$20 Non-Conviction charge.
$95 Local Police Jurisdiction.
? Government of Canada filing fee $631 (if applicable)
? U.S. government filing fee $585 USD (if applicable)

Below is a video introducing the ten step process for filing a pardon in Canada.

Apply for a cannabis charge pardon

How to apply for a Canadian cannabis pardon

  1.  Obtain your criminal record
  2.  Obtain your court documents
  3.  Obtain military conduct sheet (if applicable)
  4.  Obtain local police records check
  5.  Obtain proof of citizenship / immigration documents
  6.  Obtain the appropriate documents to provide identity

What Type of Grow Setup is Best for Me In Canada

December 5, 2018 in Growing, Products, Weed

Growing Cannabis in an Outdoor Garden

Growing cannabis outdoors in Calgary is nearly impossible given our short and unpredictable seasons.

Our seasons complicate the vegetative and flowering stages; typically, our spring and summer seasons are too short and the winter season is too long. One solution that’s popular in the southern Alberta area is using auto-flowering seeds and a green house.

Auto-flowering seeds have been bread with Cannabis ruderalis; a cannabis species that grows in harsh climates- perfect for the Calgary climate and increasing the likelihood of a successful outdoor crop.

Benefits of growing cannabis outdoor

  • Energy costs are 0
  • Setup costs are reduced
  • Potential to be completely organic
  • High yield potential
  • Safer
  • Better for the environment

Cons of growing cannabis outdoor

  • Harder to control the atmosphere for quality results
  • A rabbit might eat your pot
  • Pests and mite control
  • No control of seasons / lighting / temperature
  • Impossible in Calgary

Growing Cannabis in a Green House

Greenhouses allow some areas of Alberta to grow cannabis functionally, typically on an industrial scale. Home-based greenhouses allow additional environmental control in comparison to an outdoor crop which is highly uncontrolled.

The beauty of a greenhouse is the additional control to manipulate the temperature and humidity, light cycles and environment as a whole. Trapping infrared radiation within the transparent walls of the greenhouse gives owners the ability to use heat over an extended period without adding costly features,

Of course the more you invest, the more flexibility you will find when it comes to customization and added features and functions such as more precise temperature, light and humidity control.

Benefits of growing cannabis in a greenhouse

  • Lighting control
  • Temperature and atmosphere control
  • Conserve energy
  • Less expensive no electrical costs
  • Slightly reduced setup costs

Cons of growing cannabis in a greenhouse

  • Highly involved
  • Time consuming to monitor environment
  • Less responsive environment
  • Risk of disease and mites higher than completely controlled environment

Growing Cannabis in a Grow Tent

Grow tents are great for entry-level licensed producers looking for a simple alternative to control the atmosphere.

A well-equipped tent comes with space to attach a carbon filter- perfect for reducing the smell in multi residence living situations.

Grow tents come in all shapes and sizes to accommodate whatever your growing space may be limited to. We recommend getting a high quality tent with thick seams and zippers. Many cheaper tents available come with thin seams and weak zippers.

Benefits of using a grow tent to grow cannabis

  • Enclosed environment, easier control of humidity, wind flow, temperature etc.
  • Great for a discrete setup
  • Reflective material makes sure you get the most of your lumens
  • Easy to add carbon filter and contain smell
  • Setup for easy light hanging and attachment addition
  • Multiple sizes for any environment

Cons of growing cannabis in a grow tent

  • Limited to the size of the tent
  • Not scalable for larger grows
  • Limited customizability for multiple plants
  • Limited in size for quick adjustments
  • Expensive after all additions
  • Cheaper tents may use materials harmful to plants

Growing Cannabis In an Automated Grow Box

A grow box offers entry level and small scale grow setup a completely automated alternative.

Today’s technology has made grow boxes by far the most convenient way to grow. The good thing about automating your grow is the saved time and energy compared to that of a traditional grow.

An automated grow from start to finish can be run by programming the essentials, monitoring and adapting for your local climate and strain choice.  Some alternatives similar to Cloudponics offer applications to monitor your crop while you’re on holidays or in class.

What a time to be alive.

Benefits of growing cannabis in an automated grow box

  • Convenient, control from an app on your mobile phone
  • Less time consuming, freedom to be away from the house
  • Environment completely controlled, no smell!
  • Perfect for entry level grows
  • Can look great in your room
  • Good on energy

Cons of growing cannabis in an automated grow box

  • Pricey
  • Limited number of plants

CBD has shown tremendous benefits towards wellness in multiple studies.

November 26, 2018 in Business, Today In Weed

If you have ever shopped in the seasonal section of a hardware store then you’ve likely see or heard of Scotts Miracle-Gro. This renowned lawn care company is famous for its marketing capabilities and store front positioning.

Its current stock price has mostly doubled since 2014. The U.S. based company’s current loss in share price may be potentially caused due to the current restrictions into the hydroponic market particularly sanctioned in you the United States.

Meet the Calgary Cannabis Club, the Front Lines of the Cannabis Movement in Calgary

November 26, 2018 in Business, Spotlights, Weed

If you’ve been considering diving deeper into the cannabis culture – the Calgary Cannabis Club (CCC) is a good place to start.
With a following of over 1500 on Facebook, the CCC is pushing the scene locally, connecting cannabis users with the information they need and providing organization to the cannabis movement. In the form of marches, weekly meetings, educational information sessions, barbecues, poker games and more, I can see why the group continues to experience growth.

The Extract Team had the opportunity to meet a bunch of great folks from the CCC. After attending a few Wednesday meetings we wanted to sit down with the club to find out how they’ve built such an awesome community that we had rarely heard of in the past.

We interviewed Pat Parsons, the CCC public relations representative, here’s what he had to say.

Tell us a little bit about the CCC

The CCC has been together approximately two years. The club was formed was after Dana Larsen was in Calgary with the Overgrow Canada Tour the first time. He was arrested by the Calgary Police Service along with our president Joe Ferg. The club basically started right after that.

Did the club already have a big following prior to legalization chat?

The Calgary Cannabis Club started fairly small but the numbers are growing quick.
We’ve attended most of the expos that have been in town and had a booth there to bring more recognition to the club, and connect the community with involvement and education.
We try to base our goals around education and activism and providing a social comfort and awareness to cannabis as well a comfortable place to meet for recreation and medical users.

Does the club target any type of person specifically?

No we try to be all-inclusive.
Our goal from the beginning was to be completely inclusive whether you’re a medical patient, we have a ton of information for you, and we’re not turning our back on recreational users of cannabis at all, they have as much rights as anybody else. We feel like legalization is another level of prohibition. It’s the recreational users that are going to suffer the most through the legalization process.
Like I mentioned before, we try to be all-inclusive to men, women, children, seniors, medical patients, recreational users and anybody that is interested in cannabis.

As for the makeup of the club today, who attends your meetings and events?

I’d say we have a bit of both when it comes to recreational and medical, a little heavier on the medical side of things. That’s one thing I think legalization might help, increasing the number of recreational participants and cannabis enthusiasts.
My point of view is whether you’re medical or not, you’re still getting medical benefits from cannabis if you’re a recreational user without a prescription.

Where is home base for the CCC?

We’ve been in Penbrooke for just over a year now. We were at another location in the South previously.
Our goal is to find a forever home, maybe a storefront you know – somewhere we can call home and put a big green leaf in the window and not be ashamed anymore and hide in the shadows. It’s just a matter of time before we find our permanent or what we call our forever home.

Has there been any backlash from the community or have they been receptive of the movement?

I’d say it’s been quite receptive. With both spots we’ve been, the communities have been accommodating. Some people don’t like the smell, so I think a little discretion comes a long way when it comes to cannabis.

When it comes to events and marches how is the CCC active in the community and which events have been the most successful?

420 this year was great, we had a huge turnout this year and in the past.
Same with the Global Marijuana March which we brought to Calgary, we’ve done that event for two years now.
and it’s a world wide event. There are no organizations in Calgary to bring the march together so we’ve focused on creating a unified event.
We also work with Calgary 420 and NORML, we work with all the other active organizations in Calgary. The CCC tries to have an event at least once a month – We had a potluck recently, run charity drives for the needy especially in the winter months, craft fairs, a real range of events.
We run a variety of events in the park that are family, pet and child friendly. We keep the medicated stuff away from the kids- it’s really simple and very inviting for anyone to join.

What can someone expect to see and who can they expect to meet attending these events?

It’s a bunch of everybody! We have seniors, medical patients, we have board members that are actual drug testers, lots of people very knowledgeable in a lot of subjects as growing your own cannabis, processing your own cannabis, and pretty much everyone you can imagine.
We have a rosin press at the club. Members can bring their own cannabis and press for a solvent free extraction. We’d like to send a thanks to Dab Core for that.

How do you become a member and is there any costs associated with it?

We just started charging memberships but we survive on donation for the most part. Our membership is 10$ a month or 100$ per year, we also sell 5 year memberships for 420$.
The membership includes unlimited access to the club. We’re open 5 days a week and Wednesdays are always free for anyone to check it out. Wednesdays are our weekly meetings and anyone is welcome. You can come use the press with a donation.
The club membership includes entry to all of our events – our picnics, our potlucks, craft fairs or events that typically require a 5$ or 10$ entry fee are free for members.

What can someone expect their first visit to the club?

We have comfortable furniture, various ways to ingest your cannabis – Joints, a dab bar, e-nails on sight for you to pick the perfect temperature or size of your dosage.
A few items like pipes and rolling papers for sale in case anyone needs an item. A foosball table, a large TV for our popcorn nights that feature medicated popcorn, cotton candy and lots of treats for our Sunday poker nights.
There’s a lot of educational material in pamphlet and flyer form on sight at the club for anyone looking to learn anything cannabis related.
Nearly everybody on the board is extremely knowledgeable in terms of treating illness with cannabis, different ways to process it, edibles, and a bunch of great minds looking to share education.

For those that might be nervous to come to meetings in fear of backlash from employers etc, what do you say to those who are still burdened by the stigma that comes with cannabis prohibition?

I think the stigma is the biggest hurdle we are going to have to get over.
That will disappear slowly over time as people get more educated. The amount of misinformation and scare tactics, it’s worked really well over the last 50- 80 years. They did a good job at making people believe that cannabis is bad in general, and although it’s not for everyone I would say it’s quite the opposite.
In terms of the general attitude, it’s going to take some time to change, and those attitudes only change through education.
It’s interesting to see the changing perceptions in the corporate world. How many so called “business people” moving into the thought process – “it might have been bad, but it’s not that bad, I might as well invest some money into it”.
For me I am more of a libertarian I guess you could say, I just want to see the plant liberated from the grips of prohibition and demonization.

Any future plans for the clubs expansion?

I think as the club has grown out of it’s infancy we’ve connected with other activists and individuals and organizations connected to the educational side of things, and people more willing to challenge the government and stand for ethics, including some recent convictions.
We’ve been very supportive of Jerry Martin and his constitutional challenge that’s been coming up.
Dana Larson we also brought him back again since the arrest. We’ve given away thousands of seeds in Calgary.
We try to educate people about the stories and help these individuals financially when they need it. There are instances where the community has really bonded together under a cause. We’re just trying to free a plant here and they’re still arresting people right now.

For someone who wants to join the club, how do they go about contacting you guys?

The best way to contact us is on Facebook, our group is getting larger everyday, I think we are at about 9000 members so far. Through FB you can contact any of the admins, and all the admins are on the CCC board of directors – they will tell you where to go, how to get to the club, what events are happening etc.
To join just join the Facebook group and contact the admins. We have 3 simple questions to answer and you will gain access to see all of our content and event postings.

Your team has an interesting way of appointing the board of directors at the CCC, how does that all work?

We are actually a registered non-profit society (club) in Alberta, so our name is registered and we are accountable to the government for our standards and procedures.
The CCC has a board of directors that is voted in every year at our general meeting, so if you’re a paid member in general standing you can come vote for representatives in the fall. It’s a great way to give all our members a voice by allowing nominations for a position, or votes for someone that is already running.
We usually do the voting over a two- or three-week period to ensure everyone has an opportunity to get involved. All walks of life comes with varying schedules, so we try to accommodate everyone in the process. We try to keep it open, honest and transparent through our financials and all the events that are happening.

How can our readers donate to the club?

We are always accepting donations. You can help out by doing the same thing, add us on Facebook and contact one of the admins. We have a very good working relationship with some of the head shops in town that have helped sponsor our events (listed below)
We have a ton of very passionate people in Calgary who are behind the club and we love to give back to the community, so everything helps.

What does a positive cannabis policy look like in your eyes?

I think just stop arresting people all together for cannabis. It makes no sense putting people in jail for a plant, it just doesn’t make sense. Any convictions that involve jail time should be completely removed.
There needs to be some regulation, but the government has already sold us cannabis that’s been tainted with pesticides. If the government wants to do the right thing, they would test everything and anything and they will really take market share form the black market. People want to know where the product is coming from and that the testing is accurate.
They can’t until now, all the years people have been growing cannabis behind closed doors. There’s a lot of skill there and there is a lot of really high quality cannabis being produced that has no quality controls and no government involvement at all.

Cannabis allowed in Canadian Camp Grounds

October 15, 2018 in Today In Weed

Cannabis smokers have been given the go by Parks Canada to light up in designated camp grounds.

Along with the freedom of open smoke, Alberta, British Columbia, Ontario and Quebec are the four provinces that are opening hiking trails to cannabis consumption.

Although designated camp grounds have been given the go, not every camp site is cannabis friendly and users are not permitted to spark up around playground and campground common areas.

In Alberta, Banff and Jasper have both banned public use while cannabis is permitted in Waterton and Lake Louise.

Parks Canada has published a comprehensive guide detailing Canadian parks cannabis use by province.

Roadside Testing Continues to Puzzle Canadian Authorities

August 29, 2018 in Today In Weed, Weed

There is money to be made from every spectrum of the booming cannabis industry here in Canada. From licensed producers, all the way down to law enforcement technology. The green light has been given to almost any industry that you can think of. Companies are diversifying their research and development departments in a variety of ways.

Cannabix Technologies Inc. from Vancouver, B.C. is a technology-based company developing Breathalyzers for workplace and roadside testing. The breathalyzer in development aims to focus on detecting THC in breath primarily.

This IPO based company is currently listed on the Canadian Securities Exchange, US OTC Pinksheets, and the European Frankfurt Exchange.

The current procedure for roadside testing under Canadian Bill C-46 has authorized the approval and use of saliva-testing devices. Saliva testing has been deemed the most accurate way of detecting THC in the system. Currently, there is no THC breath testing device has been approved for law enforcement use.

The current state of saliva testing has been available and active in for some time. It has been proven to be a successful method towards detecting THC levels in saliva, unfortunately that’s it’s not a particularly good measure of intoxication.

Interestingly enough, reports from the Vermont Senate Judiciary Committee recently rejected an American bill authorizing the use of saliva testing during roadside tests. There are concerns that there is a lack of scientific validity, accuracy, and the infringement of civil liberties.

Cananabix Technologies Inc. outlines the benefits of saliva testing by stating that “saliva testing effectively identifies impaired individuals and operates in cold weather conditions.”

Although, Cannabix Technologies Inc. is adamant that THC breathalyzers are the future of roadside and workplace testing. They believe that breathalyzers rather than saliva testing provide “superior sensitivity to determine impairment better”. What does the mean for cannabis users or second hand smokers?

A 2014 study put cannabis users and second hand participants in the same room for a toke, and the results are more than alarming.

Short-term exposure to high-intensity smoke from combusted cannabis resulted in non-smoker inhalation of sufficient amounts of THC to produce positive presumptive urine tests by immunoassay with a 20 ng/mL cutoff concentration, but only a single positive occurred at higher cutoff concentrations (50 ng/mL).

Keep in mind, the research available today tends to focus on urine tests,  a mouth swab would presumably produce much higher levels.

Currently, the Calgary Police Service has not approved any device for roadside testing. Indications rely on physical signs of impairment, and the officers discretion.

The Edmonton Police Service has given the go ahead for the Drager DrugTest 5000, a saliva THC testing device approved by the Government of Canada.

Why is this important? Check out the chart below:

Canada’s Cannabis Impairment Laws and Regulations

2 nanograms (ng) but less than 5 ng of THC

Having at least 2 ng but less than 5 ng of THC per millilitre (ml) of blood within two hours of driving would be a separate summary conviction criminal offence, punishable only by a fine. This lower level offence is a precautionary approach that takes into account the best available scientific evidence related to cannabis. This offence would be punishable by a maximum fine of up to $1,000.

5 ng or more of THC

Having 5 ng or more of THC per ml of blood within two hours of driving would be a hybrid offence. Hybrid offences are offences that can be prosecuted either by indictment, in more serious cases, or by summary conviction, in less serious cases.

Combined THC and Alcohol

Having a blood alcohol concentration of 50 milligrams (mg) of alcohol per 100 ml of blood, combined with a THC level greater than 2.5 ng per ml of blood within two hours of driving would also be a hybrid offence.

It means that the potentiality for roadside and work cannabis screening is imminent. Whether breathalyzer or saliva tests, there is a technology, market, and system that looks to capitalize, if not, benefit on market of screen potential cannabis users for THC intake.

Cannabis Topicals, Oils and Lotions – Welcome to the Dawn of Healthy Cannabis Alternatives

August 29, 2018 in Opinion, Products, Today In Weed

Cannabis has a variety of uses and benefits. How it is consumed or used is still rolling through an exploratory phase. The most common consumption method is often associated with smoking.

As with smoking any carcinogen, health concerns remain a consideration, and for those looking to avoid ingestion or inhalation, a new dawn is approaching. Today a variety of products exist that allow you to do just that. So, what options do we have when it comes to using cannabis products medically or recreational, besides eating or smoking cannabis products?

While topical creams and oils have been available for quite some time, the growing emergence of companies who are creating these topical infused cannabis creams is generating a new kind of buzz.

Welcome to the new era, where an assortment of cannabis infused topical creams, sprays, lotions, and oils are now available. THC and CBD absorbed through the skin offer a variety of medical properties unavailable with smoking and vaporizing. Apply lotions or oils specifically to areas of the body that require medical relief for acute and chronic pain and avoid the high that comes with THC.

A new market will dawn to scores of people who were once skeptical of using cannabis products. Though heavily unregulated by the Canadian Government, recreational users can find topicals by searching Google for mail order marijuana companies.   Health Canada suggests contacting an approved cannabis medical practitioner to order topical products the legal way.

Perhaps this will become the new miracle product for the most significant market demographic around the globe, baby boomers seeking healthier consumption alternatives.

The American Invasion into Canadian Cannabis Retail

August 29, 2018 in Business, Opinion, Today In Weed, Weed

Is Canada the new land of cannabis opportunity? A few American cannabis retail companies’ seem to think so. The grass appears to be a little greener across the border these days. Recent news outlets from across the country have reported the arrival of an array of American cannabis retailers ready to hit the growing Canadian cannabis market. Stock prices from cannabis companies across Canada have seen a fluctuation in stock price movement during the last few months.

The summer months often proves to be a dull financial quarter for most companies. Who are these American cannabis companies and how are they performing thus far in Canada? Just as you guessed, they are merely average in terms of stock price strength.

The Canadian Securities Exchange has been merely mediocre to the American newcomers.

Green Thumb Industries, based out of Chicago (GTII: CNSX) started with an extremely high valuation in 2014. The American cannabis company was previously valued at 70 dollars a share on March 07, 2014. The current (2018) per share valuation for Green Thumbs within the Canadian market has an estimated per share valuation of around 10 dollars.

Other American companies like MedMen who have recently entered into the Canadian cannabis market at the beginning of May have grasped a more stable stock price. MedMen (CNSX:MMEN) who are only a few months new to the Canadian cannabis market has experienced a mild trading share price between 5 to 4 dollars a share.

Other companies’ in IPO stages looking to make a break for the border are Liberty Health Sciences Inc., Acreage Holdings, and Chalice Farms to name a few.

The current U.S. federal regulations against the cannabis industry within the United States has pushed these American businesses into the great white north. Cannabis investment outlets have reported that international investors feel more secure with American cannabis companies operating in Canada. Surprised? Neither are we.

Digital Purchasing of Cannabis Can Leave a Sticky Trail for Border Officials

August 12, 2018 in Tech, Today In Weed, Weed

The globalization of data worldwide has become one of the fastest growing advantages of our global connectivity. The ability to access, exchange, and control global information has been groundbreaking for many industries and everyday people. But what happens when agencies start to use this information against cannabis consumers?

Upcoming legalization of recreational cannabis in Canada has put U.S. border officials into a frenzy.

There have already been plenty reports of Canadians denied entry in the United States based on some form of association to cannabis investments or employment.

Whether you are working in the industry or just a consumer of cannabis products or investments, you may be subject to refusal into Canada’s neighboring country.  Considering the Canadian Securities Exchange has a habit of sharing investor information, it’s not a long shot for a border official to locate your investments relatively easily.

Recent information from Washington explains that the Fourth Amendment does not protect Canadians. As seen by the U.S. border agency, no constitution protects Canadian citizens data from examination. So, what information is accessible to U.S. boarder agents?

Circulating news has mentioned such things as credit card purchases, home address from mailing services, and general registration information may be data available to border agencies. The consequence of this matter could vary, stemming from temporary bans, all the way up to a lifetime ban.

Major credit card companies like Visa, MasterCard and CIBC have stated within their privacy agreements that customers’ financial data can be stored outside of Canada, and may be subject to the law of the country it is stored in. As they say, cash is king, and perhaps more remotely secure for these types of purchases.

Canadian Pot Stocks, Now or Later?

August 12, 2018 in Business, Opinion, Tech

Are pot stocks in a bubble, or is it safe to get in now?

The introduction into pot stocks have come and gone. If you haven’t heard the chatter around the water cooler at work then you might be living in isolation.

Four years ago, around May 2014, Canopy Growth Corporation was trading at 2 dollars per share. Canopy stocks recently hit an all-time high, trading at over 44 dollars per share. Naturally, those who purchased shares early in 2014 are now very happy with their investments.

In this beauty queen pageant of publically traded cannabis companies, the notable runner-ups are Aphria, and Aurora. These two companies are currently purchasable at under 10 dollars per share on the Toronto Stock Exchange. Which is almost three times the value as their big sister, Canopy. What will change come October 17th?

The change to recreational marijuana could potentially prove beneficial for the big three players. Although, stock analyst and reports from various news sources have said that there are some small-time players and American cannabis retailers who may make the jump to investment-stardom.

What suggestion can we give you? We can certainly speculate, and more importantly, we have a few tips to share.

Considerations When Looking at Canadian Pot Stocks

Tip 1: August to October generally generates poor trading numbers, many people who are holding any stock options globally, are witnessing the low valleys of the current stock market.

Tip 2: American companies may rise to the occasion if they gain access to Canadian markets, as their branding abilities are not as restricted as the Canadian cannabis suppliers. Tip number three, companies such as Shoppers Drug Mart, Molson Coors Brewing Company, and Manulife Financial Corp have entered into talks with major cannabis companies, this could yield partnering cannabis retail companies and investors’ strong financial dividends. Last, but certainly not least, buy on rumors and sell on good news.

Purchasing stock after a big announcement may be the peak of the stock price, and it may mean that you may have missed the magic investment school bus.

Calgary’s Recreational Dispensary Applications Begin Receiving Approvals

August 12, 2018 in Today In Weed

So why did some get approved and others not? So far, what we understand from various news outlets is that some specifications have restricted the approvals across the city. Tentatively, even those previously in the medical cannabis business have been denied preliminary authorization. You may ask, what are some of these specifications?
Approvals were rejected based on such things as being too close in proximity to schools, churches, or daycares. The Calgary Herald has said that “the city hopes to approve all application by August 08, 2018”. Certain business in specific areas of Calgary were recently approved in the last round. Cannabis businesses that have been given the green-light operate in communities such as, Signal Hill, Rundle Mission, Sunnyside, Mount Pleasant, Bridgeland, and Coventry, to name a few.

The AGLC noted they will likely issue 250 retail licenses across the province within the first year of legalization. No more than 15% of the total licenses can be held by a single person or business.

Although, retail businesses already approved are still obligated to seek authorization for a city business license, as well as a provincial permit. What has some troubled is that approval was given to retail shops not set to open for two more years, while others ready for business were left burning.
If you are a cannabis retail shop waiting for your golden ticket of approval, perhaps you may only need to wait a little longer. So far, it will be unknown if more restrictions are enforced after legalization, or if current restriction are lifted after October 17,2018.
Here’s a link to the Retail Cannabis Handbook issued by the AGLC.

Shopify and Aurora a Win Win for Some Regions But Not Albertans

August 7, 2018 in Business, Growing, Opinion, Tech, Today In Weed

Shopify moves further into cannabis eCommerce by striking a deal with one of Canada’s largest cannabis producers licenced to cultivate and sell cannabis in Canada and a total of 14 countries globally.

With legalization looming, Shopify Inc, the Canadian eCommerce software provider, is securing opportunities within the industry, and fast.

This year already, contracts with the governments of BC, Ontario, and now Aurora Inc are seeing Shopify move into the space as a preferred platform for eCommerce businesses in the cannabis industry.

Serving multiple regions comes with its territory; Hiring and contracting out local support staff, language barriers, varying currencies, and regional regulations are all considerations of global cannabis producers.

Shopify simplifies the process with the option to add apps that automate and simplify selling cannabis on a global scale. The turnkey platform is a choice that typically targets startups and small businesses, but clearly sees a market opportunity in Canadian cannabis.

What’s interesting is the location of Aurora, and their clientele. Located outside of Calgary, Albertans are not permitted to use the platform for ordering recreational cannabis.

Online, ordering recreational cannabis in Alberta will be limited to one website – AlbertaCannabis.org.

The AGLC is behind Alberta Cannabis, the province’s solution to buying recreational cannabis online.

Why the restricted access to online cannabis for recreational use?  Perhaps limiting access to minors?  One thing is for certain, opening up the online markets would reduce the popularity of “mail order marijuana” shops, servicing the black market purchasers which make up a large piece of eCommerce cannabis market.

The Science Behind Getting High

August 6, 2018 in Tech

Ever wonder why we get high? Same!

There are two major cannabinoids in marijuana that interact with our brains each with their own unique properties; THC (delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol) and CBD (cannabidiol).

THC is psychoactive and gives a feeling of euphoria, the “high” sensation, by increasing dopamine levels in the body. CBD is not psychoactive. CBD is chemical in marijuana that is known for its medical properties. It turns out our brains make a chemical similar to the cannabinoids produced in marijuana called endocannabinoids.

These endocannabinoids are responsible for regulating some of the body’s natural biological functions such as apatite, mood, reward, learning, memory, inflammation and pain just to name a few. This gives us insight towards why using marijuana can influence these particular sensations (need a different word here) more than others.

When these systems get stressed out, endocannabinoids flow through the brain and rush to restore balance. They help to dull unwanted sensations and enable to body to restore homeostasis. What’s important about this is that our brains have neuro receptors that can bond with the cannabinoids produced by marijuana.

In recent studies scientists have found that the two cannabinoids work in unison and alter the way each one interacts with the body as opposed to if they were taken alone. They can bolster the desired effects of one another more so than if they were used separately. THC when used alone can give the user a feeling of uneasiness or anxiety. When used in conjunction with CBD, the CBD protects the brain against these feelings and prolongs the therapeutic psychoactive effect by preventing the breakdown of THC in the liver. This symbiotic relationship works in reverse as well.

A recent study by California Pacific Medical Center in San Francisco shows that when CBD is combined with THC and injected into brain and breast tumors, the tumors not only subside but can be completely eliminated within 30 days.

The ratio where the medical properties of CBD is most effective is still unknown, studies suggest that ratio is close to 1:1, while others have found its different for every individual.
In recent studies scientists have found that in order to reap the medical benefits of CBD, its psychoactive partner THC must also be present.
